Travel nursing vs per diem shift apps
A travel contract is usually 13 weeks at one facility away from home, paid as a taxable hourly wage plus housing and meal stipends when you keep a tax home. A per diem shift app books single shifts near where you live, at an hourly rate with no stipends. Travel pays more per week and is steadier; per diem gives you control of your schedule without leaving home.

Side by side
| Compared | Travel contract | Per diem shift app |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Usually 13 weeks, often extendable | One shift at a time |
| Where | Away from your tax home | Usually near home |
| Pay | Taxable hourly wage plus non-taxable housing and meal stipends, when you qualify | Hourly rate, often above staff pay, with no stipends |
| Employment | W-2 employee of the agency | Varies by app: some hire you as a W-2 employee, some as a 1099 contractor |
| Hours | A set weekly schedule, with guaranteed hours in many contracts | Shift by shift; shifts can be cancelled |
| Benefits | Agency health insurance and other benefits are commonly offered | Usually limited or none |
| Best fit | Clinicians who want the most weekly pay and can live away for a stretch | Clinicians who want to stay home and choose their own shifts |
Comparing the money
Compare weekly take-home, not hourly rates. A per diem rate can look higher per hour than a travel contract's taxable wage, because travel pay puts a large share into stipends, which are not taxed when you maintain a tax home and pay for lodging away from it.
If an app pays you as a 1099 contractor, you pay both the employee and employer shares of Social Security and Medicare as self-employment tax, and no tax is withheld from your pay. Set money aside for quarterly estimated taxes.
Doing both
Plenty of travelers pick up per diem shifts near home between contracts. Check your travel contract first: some restrict outside work, and every facility expects you at your scheduled shifts.
Quick answers
Does travel nursing pay more than per diem?
Per week, usually yes, because a travel contract adds non-taxable housing and meal stipends to the hourly wage when you keep a tax home. A per diem shift can pay a higher hourly rate, without stipends and without guaranteed hours.
Are per diem shift apps W-2 or 1099?
It depends on the app. Some employ you as a W-2 employee and withhold taxes; others treat you as a 1099 independent contractor, so you pay self-employment tax and estimated taxes yourself.
Can I work per diem shifts while on a travel contract?
Sometimes. Read your contract for any limits on outside work, and make sure extra shifts do not conflict with your scheduled hours.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Tax home and contractor rules depend on your circumstances; a tax professional who works with travel clinicians can tell you how they apply to you.
